All of us are accustomed to the huge amount of spam/junk mails that ends up in our email Inbox. But thanks to the smart spam/junk filters which delivers only legitimate mails into our Inbox and flags all the spam But this is not the case in mobile. Sometimes, you get several unwanted calls from telemarketing companies or from service providers without your consent. If you do not want to get unwanted calls National Do Not Call Registry (NDNC Registry) is the answer.

What is UCC and NDNC Registry ?
The primary objective of the National Do Not Call Registry (NDNC Registry) is to curb Unsolicited Commercial Communication (UCC). UCC has been defined as “any message, through telecommunications service, which is transmitted for the purpose of informing about,or soliciting or promoting any commercial transaction in relation to goods, investments or services which a subscriber opts not to receive, but, does not include,

any message (other than promotional message) relating to a service or financial transaction under a specific contract between the parties to such contract;or

any messages relating to charities, national campaigns or natural calamities transmitted on the directions of the Government or agencies authorized by it for the said purpose;

messages transmitted, on the directions of the Government or any authority or agency authorized by it, in the interest of the sovereignty and integrity of India, the security of the State, friendly relations with foreign States, public order, decency or morality.

How does it work ?
The NDNC Registry will be a database having the list of all telephone numbers of the subscribers who do not want to receive UCC.After the establishment of NDNC registry, Telephone subscriber (Landline or mobile) who does not wish to receive UCC, can register their telephone number with their telecom service provider for inclusion in the NDNC. Telecom Service Provider shall upload the telephone number to the NDNC within 45 days of receipt. The Telemarketer will have to verify their calling telephone numbers list with the NDNC registry before making a call. And if your telephone or mobile number is in NDNC list, they are not authorized to call you

How to use NDNC ?

To register yourself for NDNC Registry just type a new SMS on your mobile :

START DND

and send it to 1909

To remove your number from NDNC, just type

STOP DND

and send it to 1909

Telephone calls/SMSs to this number are FREE of cost.

What to do when you get unwanted calls even after you register at NDNC Registry ?
You may complaint to your telecom service provider, if you receive Unsolicited Commercial Communnication (UCC) even after 45 days of registering your number for NDNC Registry. While making the complaint to this telecom service provider, you should mention the call originating telephone number, date/time of the call and type of commercial message. It may be noted that complaint should be lodged within 15 days from the receipt of such UCC.

And of course, you must have some common sense that you must not reveal your real telephone or mobile number to any untrusted website. NDNC can only prevent calls from registered telemarketers in India. But it cannot prevent spam through SMS. So avoid subscribing to any free SMS alerts through any untrusted website because along with SMS alerts, they may send unwanted ads too. Unlike your email, mobiles do not have spam filters for the SMS that you get

I have already explained about the Airtel Blackout Days long back. Now it was time to explore about the blackout days in other Telecommunications Service Providers (TSPs). Before reading further, a word of caution, many TSPs have custom blackout days for each telecom circle and year. So the blackout days that I am going to list out is most accurate w.r.t Karnataka Telecom Circle and for the year 2009.

What are blackout days ?
These are selected special days (usually festivals) during which no free or discounted SMS will be available to customers who have subscribed to SMS packs/Bonus cards/free or promotional SMS etc. On these days, between 00:00 hours to 24:00 hours, customers will be charged at base price i.e at regular normal tariff.

Vodafone Blackout Days
Akshaya Trithiya, New Year, Republic Day, Valentine Day, Holi, Ugadi, Vishu, Friendship Day, Independence Day, Mahasaptami, Dassera, Naraka Chturdashi , Diwali, Christmas, New Year and New Year Eve.

BSNL Blackout Days
New Year Eve, New Year, Valentine day, Diwali and Christmas.

Aircel Blackout Days
New Year, Ugadi, Friendship Day, Diwali, New Year.

Idea Blackout Days
New Year, Friendship Day, Diwali (Eve), Diwali, New Years (Eve).

Reliance Blackout Days
National Holidays, New Year, Ugadi, Friendship Day, Naraka Chturdashi, Diwali and New Year Eve.

In TSPs like Reliance, all National Holidays are blackout days. For those who flunked in Social Studies, National Holidays comprises of

Republic Day – January 26th

Independence Day – August 15th

Gandhi Jayanti – October 2nd

So be careful on these days. Don’t end up being cheated by your TSPs. They do not send any prior notification regarding these blackout days. It’s only after you are charged, you come to know about these. Why don’t they notify ? It’s because as of now, the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has not made it mandatory to inform customers about the Blackout Days.

Almost everybody in India owns a mobile whether it is PDA, Smart Phone, Nokia 1100 class phones or whatever. People seem to be obsessed and too addicted to their mobile phones. The gadget itself has become a part and parcel of our social lives. The Indian government has recently approved implementation of 11 digit mobile numbers due to increased mobile users in the country. Besides, MNP ( Mobile Number Portability ) will be implemented in trial phase in four major metropolitian cities by the end of September.

There’s a lot of buzz going on prices of new handsets. Whenever someone meets his friend who has a new mobile phone, the usual conversation obviously includes the question – “How much did you pay for the handset ?”. Sometimes, to know the prices of mobile phones in my city, I would just call the Sony Exclusive Showroom or Nokia Priority Dealer to know the prices. But asking the prices of too many models or calling them very frequently without actually buying anything from them will surely irritate them. The manufacturers website seldom publishes the prices of their phone. It’s hell of a job to find the prices in shopping sites like eBay, Rediff, Indiatimes etc.

So, in today’s post I am gonna tell you some web sites which regularly updates the prices of mobile phones. Keep yourself updated coz now it’s ‘general knowledge’ to know the prices of various models and you might need it in situations like when you need to buy a particular second hand phone. Mobile phone prices always slash and the seller may sell it to you at a bit higher price.

Here are 3 sites that publishes prices of mobile phones and are quite accurate :

Fone Arena

India Cellular

Mobile Prices In India

I myself own a SE W810i and I am happy with it
